A Night at the Opera

Earlier this week, students in French 3, French Music, French Honors, AP French, Choir, and Orchestra attended the final dress rehearsal of the opera Pelléas & Mélisande by Claude Debussy.

Before the performance, students met at Grand Central Market, an iconic spot for food with something for everyone to try and enjoy. History teacher Michael Ochs then led a short sightseeing tour through DTLA, previewing the History of Los Angeles class he will be teaching at Buckley next year while introducing students to landmarks such as the Angels Flight Railway, the historic Bunker Hill district, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall before arriving at the LA Opera for the performance.

During intermission, students spoke with their teachers about symbolism in the opera and the impact of the lighting design in supporting the symbolism of light versus darkness. Many of the French students were able to understand most of the opera without the translation, even commenting about how the translation didn’t capture all the plot points and conversations.

“This was an exceptional opportunity to discover or rediscover one of the most beautiful works of music ever composed and to experience downtown LA,” shared French and philosophy teacher Olivier Dalle.
